In Burkina Faso, women have historically been left out of the growing poultry market. Those women that do raise poultry often do not see the economic benefits of their work, and many do not even have control over the money they earn for their families.
SELEVER II, a program implemented by Tanager, an international development organization, leverages and transforms the poultry sector in Burkina Faso to increase the quality, efficiency, and reach of inclusive poultry services, improve women’s economic and social outcomes within the supply chain, and increase consumption of safe and nutritious foods.
SELEVER II recognizes that productivity-enhancing technologies and practices alone are insufficient to ensure resilience in agricultural systems. Social capital, a network of strong relationships among people who live and work in a community or society, is critical for success. Ensuring that women, historically marginalized in agriculture, develop a community support system maximizes their potential for increased productivity, sustainability, and resilience.
