Major global shocks, climatic variability, and rapidly changing demand for agricultural products have revealed fragile foundations and the need for a new modus operandi in the way food is produced.

To reach the new target TFP growth rate of 1.91 percent annually and reduce the need to increase agricultural output through unsustainable practices, we must seek to lessen the barriers that farmers at all scales of production face in accessing and adopting proven productivity-enhancing tools.

Virginia Tech’s Global Agricultural Productivity Initiative at Virginia Tech (GAP Initiative) will co-host a collaborative event with the USDA and the Sustainable Productivity Growth (SPG) Coalition. The event will include the launch of the 2023 Global Agricultural Productivity (GAP) Report®, Every Farmer, Every Tool and will unpack policy, socioeconomic, market, and innovation dimensions that impact farmers’ access to and adoption of appropriate, proven tools for sustainably improving agricultural productivity. The event will also highlight the critical role that sustainable productivity growth plays in food systems transformation and advancing climate goals as we prepare for COP28.

Join us in D.C. and online as we unveil the latest global agricultural productivity data and discuss proven solutions for accelerating growth — imperative to ensure we sustainably produce enough food, feed, fiber, and bioenergy for a growing population.

Event Hosts

The Global Agricultural Productivity Initiative at Virginia Tech (GAP Initiative) mobilizes and advocates for action and investment to accelerate agricultural productivity growth at all scales of production to create returns to farmers, society, the economy, and the environment. The GAP Report® is the heart of the GAP Initiative. This annually produced report is the premier source for productivity data, analysis, and policy recommendations that inspire action.

SPG Coalition

The Coalition on Sustainable Productivity Growth for Food Security and Resource Conservation (SPG Coalition) is a voluntary coalition composed of almost 120 members from national governments, private sector organizations, academic and research institutions, and foundations. The objective of the SPG Coalition is to accelerate the transition to more sustainable food systems through a holistic approach to productivity growth that considers impacts and tradeoffs among multiple objectives, including, but not limited to, food security and nutrition, food affordability and accessibility, farmer and farmworker incomes and wellbeing, resource conservation, biodiversity, soil health, water quality, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

GAP Initiative and Report Supporting Partners

Supporting Partners provide financial support for the GAP Initiative, GAP Report, and related activities. They offer important perspectives on critical issues facing agriculture in the U.S. and around the world.

GAP Initiative Technical Partners

Technical Partners contribute their knowledge of productive, sustainable agriculture, including the role of agricultural R&D and extension, natural resource conservation, human nutrition, international development, gender equity, and the needs of small-scale farmers.
