The Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center (AREC) has launched “CabCast,” a new weekly podcast series that represents an innovative approach to agricultural knowledge dissemination in Virginia. This inaugural episode, released on May 21, 2025, marks the beginning of a regular communication channel designed to bridge the gap between research institutions and farming communities on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

CabCast brings together Accomack and Northampton Extension agents with specialists from the Eastern Shore AREC to discuss the latest trends, research findings, and practical updates in agriculture. The podcast format represents a strategic adaptation to modernize extension services, making technical agricultural knowledge more accessible to farmers who may be working in the field or commuting between operations.

Eastern Shore AREC Powers Productivity

The Eastern Shore AREC, located in Painter, Virginia, serves as a critical hub for commercial vegetable and agronomic crop production research. The center’s work directly addresses several key drivers of agricultural productivity growth:

  • Crop Diversity and Innovation
    • Growing more than 25 different agricultural crops annually for research purposes, the center tests and develops improved varieties and production methods.
  • Soil and Nutrient Management
    • The center’s emphasis on nutrient deficiency diagnosis, fertilizer management, and soil health directly contributes to sustainable intensification – producing more output with optimized input use.
  • Integrated Systems Approach
    • Research spans horticulture, weed science, food science, entomology, and plant pathology, reflecting the bundled approach to productivity enhancement that the GAP Report advocates.
The CabCast addresses several critical elements identified in the 2024 GAP Report for accelerating productivity growth:
Strengthening Agricultural Innovation Systems

The podcast serves as a modern extension tool, creating efficient dissemination pathways for research findings, ensuring producers at all scales can access productivity-enhancing knowledge and practices. By using digital platforms, the Eastern Shore AREC is innovating beyond traditional field days and printed materials to reach farmers through convenient, on-demand content.

Bridging the Valley of Death

One of the biggest issues facing agricultural productivity growth is the gap between research breakthroughs and widespread adoption. CabCast directly addresses this challenge by:

  • Translating complex research into practical, actionable information
  • Providing regular touchpoints with farmers through weekly episodes
  • Creating a feedback mechanism where local extension agents can address real-time challenges facing producers
Distribution Tools for Knowledge Transfer

The podcast represents what the 2024 GAP Report identifies as a distribution tool–a mechanism that accelerates the viable delivery of productivity-enhancing knowledge to producers. Digital extension services like CabCast can overcome geographical barriers and time constraints that often limit farmer participation in traditional extension programs.

The launch of CabCast represents more than just a new communication tool – it embodies the evolution of agricultural extension services in the digital age. By making research findings and practical knowledge readily accessible through modern media channels, the Eastern Shore AREC is creating the type of robust agricultural innovation system that can drive sustained productivity growth. This initiative demonstrates how traditional land-grant institutions can adapt their mission of research, teaching, and extension to meet 21st-century farming needs while contributing to the urgent goal of achieving the 2 percent annual productivity growth target necessary for sustainable global food security.
